Refinishing Kitchen Countertops If you are working on a budget, then you might want to consider building your kitchen cabinets out of pallets. I am a huge fan of pallets because of their versatility, and I love all of the awesome things you can build from them.
Account Settings Get brochures from the cabinet company. It will tell you what standard sizes are available (this usually means 12″ wide at a minimum, with larger cabinets at 3″ increments). You want to have them tune up all your sizes, give you a printout so you can make copies, and include them with your bid request.
Upper Cabinets Your name It’s true. No other furniture in your home gets more use than your kitchen cupboards. Over the course of an average day, the doors get opened and shut many times. Over a period of years, this can lead to the loss of the original finish around the handles, especially if they are natural wood doors and drawer fronts. But, what about the boxes of your cabinets? They hardly get any wear. That’s a good thing. Because replacing the boxes would be hard. Replacing the doors, however, is another story all together. Do-it-yourself kitchen cabinet refacing, because it takes little skill or special tools, is a very popular solution.

1 × To prevent any drippage behind the cabinets and to enhance the look, we added a backsplash made from a really nice-looking 1×3 piece. We cut it to length, then attached it flush to the back of the countertop with pocket holes and Titebond II wood glue.
secure cabinets into wall studs Designer Tobi Fairley places elegant brass fixtures against cream-colored kitchen cabinets for a gentle contrast. Instead of 1980s-era mirror-finish brass, choose calm, friendly satin-sheen fixtures that let the warm color show through, rather than reflecting the room back at itself.
OUR STORIED HOME With practically no money in our pockets after buying our first home, Brian and I decided to put a “band-aid” on the kitchen until we could afford to fully renovate. We installed new appliances, got rid of the butcher block that was a breeding ground for germs, and found the most inexpensive countertop and sink on the market. Then we figured that stick-on backsplash and a value pack of hardware was a good idea. (Boy were we mistaken!) So when General Finishes offered to partner up on a DIY project, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to put an even BIGGER BAND-AID on our kitchen. And this time we were going to do it right!

Cabinets Made EZ Once upon a time I helped my dad install some solid cherry cabinets in their new house. It wasn’t difficult but it certainly involved two people and a decent amount of shimming and leveling.

Refinishing is replacing just the finish, by sanding off or stripping the old, worn paint or varnish if necessary and applying a clean, new coat. Ronald Cockrill

The most important aspect of installing the door handles is to maintain a consistent position from door to door. Rather than taking repetitive measurements for every handle (which can lead to mistakes), make a simple jig for the corner of the doors. We used scrap wood to cobble together a simple L-shaped bracket that fit over the door corner with predrilled holes at the locations for the door screws. We then made a pencil mark at each screw location to maintain consistency among the handles. The jig also saves lots of time compared to measuring each handle. Drill pilot holes for the handle screws, then attach the hardware.

March 17, 2017 at 3:01 am SIMPLY SHAKER WHITE My Amazon Picks Paint the first coat on the doors and drawer faces: Paint your first coat of paint the same way you did the primer — inside any grooves first, then working your way out. Paint the fronts of your cabinet doors and the faces of your drawers (don’t forget the sides). You want a smooth, thin coat; if the paint is too thick, it will pool up in the corners and drip off the edges.
